Did you know that the first electronic general-purpose computer was the ENIAC, developed in 1946 by the United States Army? It weighed over 27 tons and occupied a space of about 1,800 square feet. It was used for calculating artillery firing tables during World War II. In 1973, Motorola became the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone. It weighed about 2.2 pounds and had a battery life of just 30 minutes, but it revolutionized the way we communicate. The term “byte” was coined by Dr. Werner Buchholz in 1956 while working at IBM. A byte is a unit of digital information that consists of eight bits, representing a single character such as a letter, number, or symbol. The World Wide Web was invented by British computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. He designed it to meet the demand for information-sharing among physicists in universities and institutes around the world. Today, smartphones have more computing power than the computers used to send astronauts to the moon in the 1960s. It is estimated that a modern smartphone can perform calculations about 100,000 times faster than the Apollo 11 guidance computer. Science and technology have come a long way since the days of ENIAC, shaping the world we live in today with their incredible advancements in computing and communication technology.
