Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. This change happens by chance, although its likelihood increases with the mother’s age, particularly after 35. People with Down syndrome have unique physical characteristics, mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, and developmental delays.
